Tubing is available in a variety of materials, sizes, and configurations, each designed for a specific application within the laboratory. Tubing choice depends on key criteria such as the nature of the fluid or gas being transferred, temperatures, pressure conditions, chemical compatibility, and the specific type of equipment being used. Vacuum Tubing consisting of various plastics and rubber materials is used to connect laboratory equipment to vacuum pumps or aspirators, and is essential for processes like rotary evaporation, filtration, and drying under reduced pressure.
Plastic Tubing such as polyethylene, PTFE (Teflon™), PVC, and Tygon™ are known for their chemical resistance and are suited for transferring liquids, chemicals, and gases. Specific tubing types provide additional properties for handling. PTFE/Teflon™ tubing is ideal for high temperatures and aggressive chemicals; while Tygon™ tubing is suited for transfer of sensitive fluids as well as corrosive materials. Glass Tubing made of borosilicate is often used in lab setups for transferring liquids, gases, or chemicals found in distillation, fractionation, and other processes where high heat and chemical resistance is needed.
