Greener Shipping: Ambient Advantage for Invitrogen Antibodies

Thermo Fisher Scientific is committed to providing sustainable solutions for the life science sector without compromising product quality or performance. A key initiative in this commitment is the adoption of ambient shipping for Invitrogen™ antibodies, moving away from traditional cold-chain methods. This article summarizes the key benefits of this new process for both the environment and our customers.

Reduced Environmental Impact

Ambient shipping significantly reduces the environmental footprint associated with transporting temperature-sensitive products. By eliminating the need for coolers, dry ice, and gel ice, the process lowers energy consumption and emissions from transportation.

Sustainable Packaging

Invitrogen antibodies are now shipped in a 100% curb-side recyclable, paper-based pouch.  This new packaging reduces the shipment mass by 90% and provides a more sustainable alternative to traditional packaging. The transition from cold chain to ambient shipping is expected to eliminate more than 98,000 kg of paper and 200,000 kg of gel ice packs, and reduce emissions by approximately 500 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) annually.

Maintaining Product Quality

Rigorous temperature stability testing and broad immunoassay validation have demonstrated that antibody products shipped at ambient temperature perform identically to those shipped under cold-chain conditions. This ensures that the quality and long-term stability of Invitrogen antibodies is maintained during transit. Read the whitepaper for more information.

Operational Efficiency and Cost Reduction

Ambient shipping offers benefits like reduced packaging costs and increased operational efficiency. The new packaging is designed to reduce waste and improve freight density.

Commitment to Sustainability

This initiative is a response to customer expectations and demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and innovation. Thermo Fisher Scientific is continually evaluating how they make and deliver products, incorporating principles of green chemistry and green engineering into product design. This approach not only advances sustainability but also improves lab safety by minimizing the use of hazardous chemicals, reducing waste and material consumption, and increasing energy efficiency.
