Fluoxymesterone, CAS # 76-43-7, is a potent, orally administered, synthetic steroid with androgenic activity. It is used in the treatment of male hypogonadism.

This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Acros Organics product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Acros Organics product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.

General description

  • Fluoxymesterone is a white, odorless, crystalline powder, soluble in pyridine
  • It is an orally-administered synthetic steroid that is about 5-10 times more potent than male steroid, testosterone
  • It is metabolized in the liver, and less than 5% of this drug is excreted from the body unchanged
  • Adverse effects of fluoxymesterone include sodium and water retention leading to edema, acne, cardiovascular toxicity, and hepatotoxicity

Applications

  • Fluoxymesterone has been found to competitively inhibit prolactin or estrogen receptors in tumorigenic breast cells, and is therefore administered in the treatment of breast cancer
  • In males, this compound is used as a replacement in conditions associated with symptoms of deficiency or absence of endogenous testosterone
