Description
Isolate and identify Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli from clinical specimens using Thermo Scientific™ Karmali Selective Medium / Karmali Selective Medium, a blood-free medium on two sides of the same plate. Read more results from a single patient sample and produce more diagnostic details of pathogenic organisms. Reduce storage capacity issues in the incubator with a bi-plate while using fewer gas generating kits to create a microaerophilic atmosphere.
This microbiological medium is based on the formulation described by Karmali and is supplemented with vancomycin to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive organisms. Recognize Campylobacter growth on this medium as shiny grey colonies.
Campylobacter infections are among the most common bacterial infections, producing both gastrointestinal and systemic illnesses. Campylobacter jejuni is the most commonly reported bacterial cause of foodborne infection in the United States. Campylobacter are small, non-sporeforming, helical, curved gram-negative rods that require a microaerophilic environment and cannot tolerate drying. Campylobacter will grow at 42°C while normal fecal flora will be inhibited.
