Selectively enrich specimens undergoing examination for salmonellae with this selective medium while complying with the United States Pharmacopoeia.

Selectively enrich specimens undergoing examination for salmonellae with Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Tetrathionate Broth (Dehydrated) while complying with the description given in the United States Pharmacopoeia1. Tetrathionate Broth is specified by the 15th edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater2 and Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods3 for the enrichment of specimens undergoing examination for salmonellae.

Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Salmonella bacteria typically live in animal and human intestines and are shed through feces. Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food.

Tetrathionate Broth complies with the description given in the US Pharmacopoeia for the enrichment of specimens undergoing the examination of salmonellae.

  • Selective: the combination of thiosulphate and tetrathionate render selectivity to the medium, suppressing commensal coliform organisms4. Organisms which possess the enzyme tetrathionate reductase grow in the medium. Salmonella and Proteus species possess the enzyme; Escherichia coli and shigellae do not. Bile salts are present to inhibit the growth of the organisms that do not live in the intestine.
