Turns red-violent in the presence of bases. Phenolphtalein Indicator in Ethanol/Water, 10g/L, Chem-Lab contains 10g C20H14O4 per 1L C2H5OH and H2O (1:1). It is used as an indicator in acid-base titrations for AFNOR determination in water.

Phenolphthalein is usually dissolved in alcohol for use in experiments. It is a weak acid, which can lose H+ ions in solution. The phenolphthalein molecule is colorless, while the phenolphthalein ion is pink. In acidic and neutral solutions, the solution is colorless. When a base is added to the phenolphthalein, more ionization takes place, causing the solution to turn a red-violet color.
