Description
The Rho proteins are members of the Ras superfamily of small GTP-binding proteins which have low molecular weight of ∽21 kDa. Studies show that the amino acid sequence of the Rho family is more than 45% identical to each other and 30% or less identical to Ras or Rab/YPT proteins. The Rho proteins play an important role in the organization of actin cytoskeleton, cell adhesion, cell motility and smooth muscle contraction. The Rho proteins are also involved in the signal transduction pathways mediated by the actin cytoskeleton and the activation of the stress activated MAP kinase cascades. Researchers demonstrate that Rho kinase is capable of phosphorylating purified smooth muscle myosin phosphatase and inhibiting its activity in vitro.
