Used as an indicator for water in desiccants. Cobalt(II) Chloride Solution, 5.95%, Red, Chem-Lab is an inorganic compound of cobalt and chlorine, supplied as a hexahydrate. Reagent according to Eur. Ph. 4 (2.2.2).

Cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate is one of the most commonly used cobalt compounds in the lab. It is a red color at room temperature, but becomes blue at higher temperatures. Because of the ease of the hydration/dehydration reaction, and the resulting color change, cobalt chloride is used as an indicator for water in desiccants. Niche uses of cobalt chloride include its role in organic synthesis and electroplating objects with cobalt metal.
